Public Seminar: 'The Promise of the Republic and the Reality Democracy'
On 2nd June 1946, Italy held a referendum to choose between remaining constitutional monarchy or becoming a republic. They selected the republic. That date is commemorated as Festa Della Repubblica and is Italy's National Day.
The 1946 referendum was also the first time woman voted in a political election.
We take inspiration from commemorating this event to reflect on institutional settings and how democracy and freedom are implemented across nations.
The panel brings together experts from Constitutional Law, International Relations and Political Practice.
